Murrieta and Rubín Unveil Bold Noir Vision in TEQ

Ignition Press is pleased to announce the February release of Teq #1, the debut of a five-issue miniseries by Peter Murrieta, famed Emmy Award-winning writer for TV’s Wizards of Waverly Place and the comic Rafael Garcia: Henchman, and David Rubín, esteemed Eisner Award-nominated artist of The Rise of Aurora West and Space Scouts.

In an alternate Los Angeles ruled by a thriving Aztec Empire, Teq, a disillusioned private investigator, is drawn into a string of brutal ritual murders that echo not only his past career as a member of the official police force but also threaten to upend the stability of the city by resurrecting barbaric religious practices that have lain dormant for a reason. Plus, the fact that his own daughter is about to enter into the next phase of her own religious education makes this more personal than Teq would care to admit.

Teq hopes the familiarity of the violence is just coincidence, but in his bones, he knows there is something deeper going on. Something involving politics and the continued independence of the empire. Can he navigate a dangerous web of corruption and faith to save his family, their community, and the whole of the nation from descending into chaos?

“In a world I didn’t make myself, I wanted to make a world I did make, and ask you to come be a part of an Aztec/Chicano Futurism Noir movement that can start with this book about a guy trying to solve a case,” said writer Peter Murrieta.

“Working on Teq has been a real challenge,” said artist David Rubín. “Starting at zero and creating an original world where past, present and future collide, with tons of characters and things that I’ve never draw nbefore, it's hard but exciting at the same time. I always try to choose projects that make me grow, that make me a better artist, and this is definitely one of them."

An imaginative vision of a world that could have been, Teq is an inventive mix of noir, science-fiction, and mythology unlike any other comic. In addition to full color interior art by Rubín and lettering by Spanish artist El Torres, the first issue of Teq will feature variant covers by two of Los Angeles’ most prominent comic book artists, the legendary co-creator of Love & Rockets, Gilbert Hernandez, and La Mano del Destino’s J. Gonzo, who is well known for working the iconography of Chicano culture into his comic book illustrations. Future issues will feature variants from fine artist Mexifunk and comics sensation Dani (Batwoman). A five-issue miniseries being serialized by Ignition Press, Teq #1 will go on sale in comic book shops and on digital platforms February 24, 2026. Each issue will also feature additional original text material from Murrieta.

“As a comic book editor, you are always hoping that something will land on your desk that is a fresh take on a genre, a totally original vision, or makes you remember why you love comics,” added Ignition Press Editor-in-Chief Jamie S. Rich. “You’d settle for one or two of those, but in Teq, I found all three. It dabbles in some of my favorite genres, completely recontextualizing the classic private detective, while also evoking the Los Angeles I grew up in. Peter and David aren’t just driving in their own lane, they are building their own dang highway.”
